Former coxswain and rowing coach, Australia’s John Coates has been elected to be the new head of both the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).




Coates, a lawyer by occupation, is the president of the Australian Olympic Committee and also a member of the IOC Executive Board. He has been a member of ICAS since 1994 and its vice president since 1995.



Coates, 60, took up rowing at high school and coxed crews to a number of high school victories. He went on to become the president and then chairman of Rowing Australia. He was the rowing section manager for the 1976 Montreal Games.
