World Champion in the men’s single scull, Ondrej Synek has been beaten by Sweden’s Lassi Karonen. At the Czech Long Distance Open Championships, Synek, from the Czech Republic, finished second to Karonen and 26 seconds slower over the 6000m distance.
Karonen, who finished seventh in the single at last year’s World Rowing Championships, is a regular participant in this event and was second to Synek in 2010 at the Czech Open, but this year Karonen turned that result around and finished in a time of 21:12 while Synek could only manage 21:39. Just one second behind Synek, David Jirka, from the Czech Republic’s men’s double, was third across the line. Karonen has won the event before, most recently in 2007 against the great Vaclav Chalupa (CZE).
