Rowing in very cold conditions

Just a reminder of a few things to consider when deciding whether to row during this very cold snap.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> •Ice is an important indicator of extreme cold. It is a risk on land, - slipping and dropping the boat, and on the water - floating sheets of ice will damage boats. <br /> <br /> •Cold water immersion is a high risk, particularly for juniors and masters. All clubs should read the RowSafe guidance (Section 1.8) and be aware of the effects of cold shock and hypothermia. In cold weather you need to be absolutely certain you have assessed all the risks and you can react effectively to an incident. The most important thing is to reduce the likelihood of a capsize. You could restrict outings to more stable boats, experienced crews and increase the level of launch supervision that will help prevent incidents and also alert rescue services immediately. <br /> <br /> All crews need to be reminded to wear appropriate clothing, use suitable equipment and the imperative of getting out of the water as quickly as possible in the event of a capsize. You may need to carry more safety equipment in the boat/launch and you will definitely need an enhanced emergency plan to identify when an incident has happened and recover people as quickly as possible. Get the edge at World Rowing coaches conference

The World Rowing Coaches Conference is coming up in January 2011 with the theme of “Finding the edge – talent and technology’. This is a chance for leading coaches from around the world to share ideas and developments in rowing performance and training methods. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The conference will take place from 20 – 23 January 2011 in Windsor, Great Britain, which is just down the road from the regatta venue for the 2012 Olympic Games – Eton Dorney. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Day One will focus on finding and developing talent. The main speakers are Tom Terhaar, the 2009 World Rowing Coach of the Year whose successful 2008 Olympic cycle was completed by coaching the United States women’s eight to Olympic gold medals. He followed it up in 2009 with World Champion gold in the women’s eight and pair. Terhaar will be joined by Steve Gunn who manages GB Rowing Team Start Programme – Great Britain’s talent identification and development initiative whose graduates include current World Champions. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Day Two will focus on technology and how the coach can gain maximum benefits. Coates to head Sports Court of Arbitration

Former coxswain and rowing coach, Australia’s John Coates has been elected to be the new head of both the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Coates, a lawyer by occupation, is the president of the Australian Olympic Committee and also a member of the IOC Executive Board. He has been a member of ICAS since 1994 and its vice president since 1995.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Coates, 60, took up rowing at high school and coxed crews to a number of high school victories. He went on to become the president and then chairman of Rowing Australia. The crowd is the winner on the final day of the World Champs

 <br /> Spurred by an atmosphere of thousands of supporters, the final day of rowing at the 2010 World Rowing Championships brought to a close one of the most successful championships ever. For all countries athletes commented about how the audience made their race with those sitting in the starting blocks, 2000m down the lake, able to hear the cheering from the finishing race before them. Το χάλκινο μετάλλιο στη δίκωπο άνευ πηδαλιούχου κατέκτησαν οι Γιώργος Τζιάλλας και Γιάννης Χρήστου, στο Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα κωπηλασίας που διεξάγεται στη λίμνη Καραπίρο της Νέας Ζηλανδίας. Η επιτυχία αυτή είναι η 3η για την Ελλάδα στη διοργάνωση, μετά τη 2η θέση στην τετράκωπο άνευ στους άνδρες και την 3η στο διπλό σκιφ στις γυναίκες.<br /> <br /> Οι Γιάννης Χρήστου (αριστερά στη ΦΩΤΟ) και Γιώργος Τζιάλλας<br /> <br /> Οι Τζιάλλας και Χρήστου τερμάτισαν σε χρόνο 6.36.00, ενώ το χρυσό μετάλλιο κατέκτησε η Νέα Ζηλανδία καθώς το πλήρωμα του σκάφους διέτρεξε την απόσταση σε 6.30.16, ενώ το ασημένιο κατέληξε στους Βρετανούς με χρόνο 6.30.48. Ο τερματισμός ήταν συγκλονιστικός, καθώς οι Νεοζηλανδοί που ήταν δεύτεροι, κατάφεραν να τερματίσουν πρώτοι ξεπερνώντας τους Βρετανούς στα τελευταία 500 μέτρα της διαδρομής. Η νίκη των Νεοζηλανδών είναι η 13η διαδοχική σε βάρος των Βρετανών.<br /> <br /> Το μετάλλιο των Τζιάλλα και Χρήστου είναι το τρίτο για τα ελληνικά χρώματα στο Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα, καθώς χθες οι , οι Γιάννης Τσίλης, Στέργιος Παπαχρήστος, Νίκος και Απόστολος Γκουντούλας, τερμάτισαν δεύτεροι στην τετράκωπο άνευ πηδαλιούχου και η Αλεξάνδρα Τσιάβου με τη Χριστίνα Γιαζιτζίδου κατετάγησαν τρίτες στο διπλό σκιφ.<br /> <br /> Χρήστου: «Δεν δυσκολευτήκαμε να τερματίσουμε τρίτοι»<br /> <br /> Εμφανώς ικανοποιημένος από την κατάκτηση του ασημένιου μεταλλίου, ο Γιάννης Χρήστου δήλωσε μετά τον τερματισμό: «Προσπαθήσαμε σε όλη τη διάρκεια της κούρσας να παραμείνουμε κοντά στους Νεοζηλανδούς και στους Βρετανούς. Κάναμε μια προσπάθεια να επιτεθούμε, όμως οι αντίπαλοί μας αποδείχτηκαν περισσότεροι δυνατοί από εμάς. Είμαι πολύ χαρούμενοι για την 3η θέση, καθώς σε αυτό το Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα έχουν σημειωθεί αρκετές εκπλήξεις. Πάντως δεν  δυσκολευτήκαμε να εξασφαλίσουμε το χάλκινο μετάλλιο, το οποίο αφιερώνω στο νεογέννητο γιό μου Νίκο και στη σύζυγό μου Τόμι».

Χάλκινη και η δίκωπος

Με ένα ακόμη μετάλλιο(το τρίτο) ολοκληρώθηκε για την Ελλάδα το Παγκόσμιο πρωτάθλημα ανδρών γυναικών στην λίμνη Καραπίρο της μακρινής Νέας Ζηλανδία. <br /> Ο Γιάννης Χρήστου και ο Γιώργος Τζιάλλας κατέκτησαν το χάλκινο μετάλλιο στην δίκωπο άνευ πηδαλιούχου επιβεβαιώνοντας αρχικά τον τεχνικό σύμβουλό της Ομοσπονδίας Τζιάνι Ποστιλιόνε αλλά και όλους όσους τους συμπεριελάμβαναν στα φαβορί για την κατάκτηση ενός μεταλλίου στην κορυφαία διοργάνωση του κόσμου .<br /> Το ελληνικό πλήρωμα μπροστά σε 10.000 θεατές ,ξεκίνησε πολύ δυνατά στον τελικό και διεκδικούσε την 2η θέση μέχρι περίπου τα μέσα του αγώνα . Στη συνέχεια όμως τα πληρώματα της Βρετανίας και της Νέας Ζηλανδίας ξέφυγαν ενώ ταυτόχρονο η ελληνική βάρκα εξασφάλιζε την 3η θέση παίρνοντας διαφορά από την 4η Ιταλία. <br /> «Προσπαθήσαμε να διατηρηθούμε στο ίδιο επίπεδο με τη Βρετανία και την Ν Ζηλανδία και επιδιώξαμε  να τους επιτεθούμε στο πρώτο μέρος του αγώνα αλλά ήταν πολύ δυνατοί για μας . Στη συνέχεια καταφέραμε να εξασφαλίσουμε τη Τρίτη θέση πολύ νωρίς .Είμαστε πολύ χαρούμενοι  για το  χάλκινο μετάλλιο γιατί σε αυτό το Παγκόσμιο πρωτάθλημα οι εκπλήξεις ήταν πάρα πολλές . Θέλω να αφιερώσω αυτή την επιτυχία στον μόλις 20 ημερών γίο μου και την σύζυγό μου» είπε ο Γιάννης Χρήστου που με την επιστροφή του στην Ελλάδα θα δεί και για πρώτη φορά τον γιό του αφού η σύζυγός του γέννησε μια μέρα μετά την αναχώρηση της Εθνικής για τη Νέα Ζηλανδία.<br /> Πρώτη στον τελικό που ολοκληρώθηκε τις πρώτες πρωινές ώρες του Σαββάτου ήταν η Ν. Ζηλανδία  με 6.30.16 δεύτερη η Μ. Βρετανία με 6.30.48 και Τρίτη η ελληνική βάρκα με 6.36.00 ενώ η Ιταλία ακολούθησε με 6.42.49 .
